Formed in 1964, we were the first biomedical informatics department in the U.S., and we continue to be recognized as an exceptional, comprehensive training program. Our faculty are nationally recognized, holding many prestigious awards and honors.
The non-thesis online option of the Master of Science degree was designed for remote students and working professionals who want to face the new healthcare challenges related to biomedical informatics and health information technology.
At the University of Utah our courses combine traditional online learning – where you study individually at home at your own pace – with interactive learning. Interactive learning increases your engagement with classmates and instructor, as well as with the materials covered. In this manner it improves learning outcomes. Our courses combine the flexibility of online teaching with the advantages and direct engagement of traditional teaching.
Interactive learning comes in a variety of ways:
- Through group assignments– where you collaborate via email or a discussion forum to answer a problem set.
- Through contributions to a discussion forum– where you directly respond to previous posts.
- Through “peer reviews”– where you review and comment upon assignments from other students.
Our classes also offer multiple routes to stay connected and get help:
- Converse directly with the instructor via email.
- Participate in and guide online discussions.
- Attend online office hours in discussion threads or on the phone.
- Instructors are available in “real” office hours for students on or near campus; and (for some courses) we offer (voluntary) Q&A sessions in a classroom.
Master of Science in Biomedical Informatics
Because an important aspect of informatics training is interactive hands-on skill development, some classes in the program will have up to 6 scheduled virtual meetings. These meetings will give students the opportunity to interact with instructors synchronously and are vital to online students having the same experience as our in-person students.
There are no formal course prerequisites to enter the program, but we strongly encourage a background or course completion in computer programming or healthcare related topics. During summer time applicants will have to pass an online course on Programming with Python and work on several readings assignments in preparation for the program.
At present, only the Applied Clinical Informatics track is being offered online. Online students are required to take and pass all courses in the track. More information about courses and program of study: https://medicine.utah.edu/dbmi/academics-education/masters/track-clinical-informatics.php
To calculate an estimate of tuition costs please use the University of Utah Tuition Calculator. Tuition for online courses is based on residency and is the same whether you take an online or on campus course. Online students do pay an additional $60 fee, per course, to cover the costs of operating online courses.
Please visit University of Utah’s tuition rate schedule for more information about tuition and to calculate tuition rates by program.
Biomedical Informatics is a relatively young discipline of study (less than 50 years old), covering areas of medicine, genetics, statistics, biology, computer programming, machine learning, artificial intelligence, natural language processing, psychology, and many other related subfields. As such, the application of these competencies is seen in government, educational, and private sector organizations at a rate that is outpacing standard economic job growth rates. The focus of our online program is in clinical informatics, and clinical informaticist for example, can command a salary of 40-90k at the entry level.
Applications for admission to the Master of Science in Biomedical Informatics are only accepted for the Fall term.
The following materials are required for admission:
- Bachelor's degree from a regionally-accredited university or college
- Minimum GPA of 3.0
- Personal Statement
- Three letters of recommendation
- College transcripts
- English Proficiency (international only) – (80 TOEFL, 6.5 IELTS)
