An interview with Keith Diaz Moore, Ph.D., AIA

In this episode, we had the pleasure of chatting with Keith Diaz Moore, the Associate Provost at Institutional Design and Strategy for the University of Utah. Keith shares his passion for supporting our aging population through architecture, inspired by his grandmother's experience with Alzheimer's. He completed a fellowship with the Institute for Aging and maintains Fellow status with the Gerontology Society of America. Keith explains how important it is that gerontological principles are integrated into architectural education, emphasizing empathy and understanding the design needs of older adults.

"While aesthetics are important, functionality must come first to ensure safety and accessibility."

In this interview, we learn about some of the challenges and innovations in designing for older adults, such as maintaining functionality before aesthetics and insights into future trends like smart technologies and community-focused nursing homes. Keith’s experience and expertise highlight how important the study of Gerontology is within the field of architecture.
