An interview with Professor Mark Maier

Professor Mark Maier is a brilliant new faculty member, who has joined the University of Utah’s Mechanical Engineering department and will be teaching within the Systems Engineering program. In this interview, he discusses his experience within the field, what inspires him personally, and what excites him most about joining the department. Mark has over 35 years of real-world experience, including his most recent work at Hill Air Force Base and is excited to share with the University of Utah students.

During the interview, Mark shared his passion for fostering innovation and experiential learning. He sees himself as “opportunity-driven,” and looks forward to creating collaborative and engaging experiences for his students. Rather than adhere to a rigid lesson plan, Mark’s teaching philosophy is to adapt his lessons to student needs and develop courses that align with evolving industry demands.

“I really appreciate being here.  I am glad the department took their own chance on bringing me here to do this”, he said, expressing his excitement to be part of the University of Utah’s Mechanical Engineering Department.
