The Graduate Certificate in Engineering Management (GCEM) will first be awarded at the conclusion of the Fall 2026 semester. Students who will be enrolled in at least one credit in Fall 2026 may complete the coursework earlier and apply to receive the GCEM after September 2026.

Engineering Management Certificate Overview

At the University of Utah, our courses combine the flexibility of online teaching with the advantages and direct engagement of traditional teaching. Enjoy the benefit of studying online at your own pace while still engaging with classmates and instructors. This flexible way of teaching improves your overall experience and your ability to retain what you learn.

Interactive learning comes in a variety of ways:

  • Group assignments, where you collaborate via email or a discussion forum to answer a problem set.
  • Contributions to a discussion forum, where you directly respond to previous posts.
  • Peer reviews, where you review and comment on assignments from other students.

Our classes also offer multiple routes to stay connected and get help:

  • Communicate directly with the instructor via email.
  • Participate in and guide online discussions.
  • Attend online office hours in discussion threads or on the phone.
  • Instructors are available in “real” office hours for students on or near campus; for some courses we offer Q&A sessions in a classroom.

To earn the Engineering Management Certificate, students must complete 15 credit hours: 

6 Credit Hours of Required Courses

  • SIME 6500 Management and Leadership for Engineers
  • SIME 6530 Project Management for Engineers

3 Credit Hours from One of these Courses

  • SIME 6000 Analytics for Systems Management
  • SIME 6050 Operations Research for Systems

6 Credit Hours of Engineering Management Related Electives

  • Any SIME course
  • CVEEN 6720 Project Scheduling
  • CVEEN 6730 Project Management and Contract Administration
  • ENGIN 6020 Emeerting Technologies and Engineering Entrepreneurship
  • ENGIN 6791 Launching Technology Ventures

Note: Many classes are crosslisted in the college. Any equivalent crosslisted class can be used to satisfy a requirement 

All courses must have a B or better grade. 

In the semester that you wish to be awarded the GCEM, fill out the Completion Form. This form must be filled out at least a week before finals week.

The tuition rate for the Graduate Certificate in Engineering Management is $2701.42 per course. Cost is subject to change without notice.

Scholarships and federal financial aid are not available for this certificate program. However, the military and many private companies offer tuition reimbursement programs. 

Students are encouraged to contact the University of Utah’s Financial Aid Office for guidance.

Note: This program qualifies for the U of U employee reduced tuition benefit.

Students can either be admitted as a degree-seeking student (admitted to a particular masters or Ph.D. program) or as a nonmatriculated student.  Nonmatriculated students can typically be admitted within a week of the start of a semester.

Note: You must be admitted to either the on-campus or the online campus. 

Additionally, students should meet one of the following two requirements: 

  • An undergraduate degree from an accredited institution and a STEM discipline;
  • two semesters of calculus;
  • one semester of a probability and/or statistics course.

OR

  • Two semesters of calculus with a B or better;
  • one semester of a probability and/or statistics course with a B or better;
  • an undergraduate degree from an accredited institution, and relevant work experience as approved by the Director of the Engineering Management Programs.
