Beyond the Courthouse

Contrary to popular belief, the legal field extends far beyond traditional law firms and courtrooms. S.J. Quinney College of Law MLS graduates have a distinct ability to pursue diverse career paths. These include roles within government agencies, social justice, healthcare, finance, human resources, corporate compliance, and technology. Chad Nelson shared his story as an MLS student with the University of Utah’s S.J. Quinney College of Law. He relates how his work with Toys R Us led him to seek a deeper understanding of compliance and regulatory law.

“The MLS program appealed to me because it allows me to broaden my knowledge of compliance and regulatory law, including international law, as I have launched brands into international markets under EN (European) standards. The program also has elements I can apply immediately into my work, such as mediation and conflict resolution. In summary, the program is a catalyst to hone my career into the next chapter and maintain marketable and relevant skills.”

In today’s business landscape where organizations seek creative ways to leverage customer data, international compliance, outsourcing, and balancing environmental regulations—a solid grasp of legal principles is more important than ever.

Beyond the Paycheck

While financial rewards are certainly appealing, many students find the impact they’ll make in their communities to be the most fulfilling prospect. Whether mediating disputes, advocating for marginalized communities, or helping draft policies to protect consumer rights, MLS students report great satisfaction with the impact they can achieve. MLS student Anna-Cajsa Gipson upholds her family’s tradition of valuing education and using her knowledge to help others within her community.

“There are so many opportunities available through the MLS program, like becoming an LPP (licensed paralegal practitioner) or a mediator. You don’t have to be a lawyer to support people in their legal journeys,” Gipson says. “There are so very many that it’s been hard to narrow down what I’d like to do with it. I would like to help others to be the best that they can be, especially through education. Whether that is immigration law, Title IX, or other educational advocacy, I don’t know yet, but I’m excited to find out.”

Beyond the Degree

What sets the S.J. Quinney College of Law MLS graduate apart is their knowledge of the law and the ability to apply it thoughtfully and ethically. Graduates of the program acquire expertise and insight into the U.S. regulatory framework, governmental operations, and the legal environment. This encompasses a comprehensive understanding of the judicial system, the functions of legal professionals, alternative methods for resolving disputes, and the fundamental principles that establish the law. Students gain exposure and experience with legal terminology, substantive legal texts, statutes, legal reasoning, and writing. In addition, students have opportunities to take electives that interest them including criminal law, employment law, business law, family law, property law, and more.

Students regularly participate in student and alumni activities and events alongside the JD students at the College of Law, taking advantage of networking and career services opportunities available to all College of Law students.

“I liked that I was able to attend online and still make connections with students and staff in the program. I also like that alumni can maintain their access to the beautiful building and are part of the U Alumni family.”
