Anatomical Health Sciences Certificate Overview

At the University of Utah, our courses combine the flexibility of online teaching with the advantages and direct engagement of traditional teaching. Enjoy the benefit of studying online at your own pace while still engaging with classmates and instructors. This flexible way of teaching improves your overall experience and your ability to retain what you learn.

Interactive learning comes in a variety of ways:

  • Group assignments, where you collaborate via email or a discussion forum to answer a problem set.
  • Contributions to a discussion forum, where you directly respond to previous posts.
  • Peer reviews, where you review and comment on assignments from other students.

Our classes also offer multiple routes to stay connected and get help:

  • Communicate directly with the instructor via email.
  • Participate in and guide online discussions.
  • Attend online office hours in discussion threads or on the phone.
  • Instructors are available in “real” office hours for students on or near campus; for some courses we offer Q&A sessions in a classroom.

All courses at the University of Utah, whether online or on campus, are taught by the same expert faculty members.  

These courses must be completed to earn the certificate.

  • ANAT 6300 Foundations of Human Biology (Fall, 4 credits).
  • ANAT 6310 Organ Systems of the Trunk (Fall, 3 credits).
  • ANAT 6320 Appendicular Systems (Spring, 3 credits).
  • ANAT 6330 Head, Face, and Neck (Spring, 3 credits).

Elective Courses

Select two, one-credit seminar-style courses (online) or the two-credit ANAT 6500 bootcamp held in the summer (in-person) to fulfill the elective requirement.

  • Online:
    • ANAT 6530 Critical Evaluation in the Biological Sciences (Fall, 1 credit).
    • ANAT 6550 Communicating in the Health Sciences (Fall, 1 credit).
    • ANAT 6540 Introduction to the Scientific Method (Spring, 1 credit).
    • ANAT 6560 Biomedical Imaging (Spring, 1 credit).
    • ANAT 6570 Cellular Communication Across Membranes (Spring, 1 credit).
  • In-person:
    • ANAT 6500 Anatomic Sciences bootcamp (2 week, Summer, 2 credits).

Non-matriculated students typically do not qualify for federal aid. However, some private scholarships or funding sources may be available. Students are encouraged to contact the University of Utah’s Financial Aid Office for guidance.

Prerequisites:

Applicants must meet academic minimum requirements for admission. The requirements listed do not guarantee admission into the certificate program.

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution.
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0 (consideration for the last 60 semester hours if GPA is below this threshold).

For admission to the graduate certificate, students must submit:

  • Unofficial transcript showing undergraduate level courses taken and grades
  • Letters from 2 references with knowledge of your academic and/or professional experience.
    • While letters of character are welcome, first-hand knowledge of performance and potential in experiences that relate to the graduate certificate goals are essential.
  • A short (maximum of 1 page) essay addressing the following:
    • Why are you interested in pursuing this graduate certificate?
    • Why do you believe you will be successful in an asynchronous, online certificate program?
