Master of Athletic Training (MAT) Overview
The hybrid MAT curriculum utilizes an innovative layered approach to active student learning. The program includes the following online, live, and in-person elements:
- Asynchronous Lessons: Didactic content and lab skills are introduced through recorded lessons that students complete online.
- Live Sessions: Each class holds weekly synchronous online meetings between students and faculty.
- Immersions: On-campus experiences consisting of physical learning and assessment. Immersions are roughly 6-7 days in length and occur at the following times:
- During orientation at the beginning of the program
- Twice during each fall and spring semester, with one toward the middle and one at the end of the semester. Summer semesters include one immersion only.
- Clinical Education: Students complete part-time clinical education during their first year and at least 25 weeks of full-time immersion experiences during their 2nd year.
The mission of the Master of Athletic Training program at the University of Utah is to develop confident and competent board-certified athletic training professionals. Our graduates will be highly qualified to practice in a wide variety of settings and become effective members of the healthcare team using a student-focused healthcare curriculum, distinct interprofessional education, community engagement, and stimulating clinical experiences.

All courses at the University of Utah, whether online or on campus, are taught by the same expert faculty members.
Prerequisites, requirements, and the admission process are the same as the residential pathway.
To earn a Master of Athletic Training degree, students must complete 55.5 credit hours. Degree requirements include successful completion of all required coursework, and clinical experiences, as evaluated by clinical preceptors. Students must earn a grade of C- or higher in all courses and maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.
The full-time degree spans six semesters, including summer terms. Part-time options may be available for those who require more flexibility.
