Why Choose UOnline’s Master of Social Work?

UOnline's Master of Social Work (MSW) degree program elevates your prior experiences to address society's most pressing challenges with confidence and empathy, from direct client support to policy advocacy and leadership.
The curriculum in the University of Utah's College of Social Work emphasizes mental health, social justice, and community well-being so that you can create positive change in the lives of those you serve. And with roots in the Advanced Generalist perspective, you develop the flexibility to work across micro, mezzo, and macro levels of social work.
One of the program's defining features is the opportunity to apply what you learn in real-world settings. With partnerships at over 500 social service agencies, you put the evidence-based theory you learn in coursework into action through supervised practice in your local field placement. These can take place in government agencies, community-based programs, hospitals, resource centers, correctional facilities, and more.
MSW Pathways
We offer two paths to earning your online MSW:
- Advanced Standing: If you already hold a Bachelor of Social Work (BSW), you can complete the 45-credit Advanced Standing program in just one year.
- Standard: The 60-credit Standard program provides comprehensive training over two years of full-time study for those without a BSW.
Both options provide the same core benefits—expert faculty, immersive field experiences, and a strong focus on mental health and social justice. We ensure that you graduate ready for the challenges and rewards of social work practice.

Interactive learning comes in a variety of ways:
- Collaboration via email, Zoom, or a discussion forum to complete group assignments.
- Contributions to a discussion forum, where you discuss important topics, learn to think critically, and respond directly to other class members' posts and receive feedback from your instructor.
- Peer reviews, where you review and comment on assignments from other students.
Our classes also offer multiple routes to stay connected and get help:
- Communicate directly with the instructor via email.
- Participate in and guide online discussions.
- Attend online office hours in discussion threads or on the phone.
- Instructors are available in “real” office hours for students on or near campus; for some courses we offer Q&A sessions in a classroom.
